John's Journal... Entry 37 - Day 2

click to enlargeMore of Larry Nixon's Favorite Lure Selections

EDITOR'S NOTE: Larry Nixon of Bee Branch, Arkansas, Angler-of-the-Year twice on the B.A.S.S. circuit, also has won four MegaBucks tournaments as well as the BASS Masters Classic in 1983.

Strike King Spinnerbait

"I'll have to choose a 3/8-ounce Strike King spinnerbait with a silver blade in front and a gold Colorado blade behind for my third best bass lure," Nixon explained. "I like this combination of blades when I'm fishing wood cover. I match the color of the skirt to the water color. If I'm fishing grass, I'll change the blades out and use willow-leaf blades. Any time I'm fishing visible shoreline cover, that Strike King spinnerbait is a hard lure to beat."

Strike King Diamond Shad Crankbait

"Every angler needs a prospect bait, a lure that allows him to cover a lot of water quickly and locate schools of bass. My favorite prospecting bait is the Diamond Shad crankbait made by Strike King, and that's my fourth choice. This bait has BB's in it and produces plenty of sound as it comes through the water, just like other lipless crankbaits do. I like this bait because I can wind it up fast, cover plenty of water and fish in the 2- to 5-foot depths. I'll use this lure when I'm fishing scattered grass or sandbars or to find scattered bass chasing or feeding on shad near the surface."

Berkley 7-inch Power Worm

click to enlarge"My fifth choice is the 7-inch Berkley Power Worm with blue metal flakes that you can fish anywhere and catch bass. I prefer to fish this lure around visible cover. I rig it Texas style with a 1/4-ounce slip sinker. I also use the Power Worm for much of my offshore fishing. When I'm fishing deep ledges or underwater structure, I'll put a 3/8-ounce slip sinker in front of the worm to get the bait down to that deeper structure. The worm is one of the most versatile lures you can fish and the one bait appropriate in almost any fishing conditions or in any type of structure."
