John's Journal... Entry 37 - Day 4

Gary Klein and Stanley Mitchell Make Their Top Picks

click to enlargeEDITOR'S NOTE: Gary Klein of Weatherford, Texas, two-time Angler-of-the-Year on the B.A.S.S. fishing circuit, always has loved to fish and has never had a job that hasn't involved fishing. So, Klein knows his lures. Stanley Mitchell of Fitzgerald, Georgia, won the BASS Masters Classic in 1981 at only 21 years of age and continues to catch bass today.

Gary Klein:

"I really appreciate your giving me five choices and not just one. Here's what I've found will catch bass: the black-and-blue Rattle Back 1/2-ounce jig; the 1/2-ounce white-and-chartreuse Vibraton spinnerbait; Berkley's Frenzy deep-diving crankbait in the 3/4-ounce size in the fire-tiger color; a topwater lure called Mega Bass made by Dog-X; and a buzzbait. Like Ken Cook, I'll have to put some plastic worms in my pocket, and I'll choose the 6-inch Power Lizard by Berkley.

"With these six lures, I feel I can fish successfully for bass anywhere in the nation, under any weather and water conditions and on any type of structure. These factors also will determine what kind of lure presentation I'll make with each of these lures or which of these lures I'll select for fishing. However, regardless of where you go and how you have to fish, I believe one of these lures will produce bass for you and maybe even more than one."

Stanley Mitchell:

3/8-Ounce Jig with Trailer

click to enlarge"I love to pitch and flip a 3/8-ounce jig with a black and blue #11 Zoom trailer," Mitchell commented. "I believe the jig is as versatile as the plastic worm and can be fished anywhere you can find a plastic worm. I'll fish the jig through cover and on deep drop-offs and ledges."

6-Inch Plastic Worm

"My number-two choice will be the 6-inch plastic worm with the June bug being my favorite color. But I'll match my worm color and weight size of my worm to the depth of water and the color of water I'll be fishing. Most often I'll fish with a very lightweight plastic worm because I'll fish in extremely shallow water."

3/8-Ounce Spinnerbait

"The spinnerbait will be my number-three choice. I prefer a 3/8-ounce spinnerbait with a #5 willow-leaf blade on the back and a small Colorado blade on the front. I usually like a white- or chartreuse-colored skirt, because I've found I catch bigger bass on those colors."

"The fourth lure I'd put in my bag would be a #7 or a #8 Bomber Model A fire-tiger-colored crankbait. I'll choose this crankbait to fish in 0 to 7 feet of water around visible cover."

Minnow-Type Buzzbait

"If I can add one more lure to my sack, I'll pick a 1/4-ounce medium-size blade, minnow-type buzzbait to fish on the surface for actively feeding bass."
