John's Journal... Entry 37 - Day 5

Denny Brauer and Davy Hite Select Their Favorite Lures

Click to EnlargeEDITOR'S NOTE: Denny Brauer and Davy Hite, both BASS Masters Classic winners, consistently finish at the top in any fishing tournament they enter. Brauer of Camdenton, Missouri, the only bass fisherman ever featured on the Wheaties Breakfast of Champions cereal box, won the title of FLW Angler-of-the-Year. Davy Hite of Prosperity, South Carolina, fished his first Classic in 1993 and also took the title of Angler-of-the-Year on the B.A.S.S. circuit.

Denny Brauer:

Strike King Pro Model Jig

"My number-one choice of lures will have to be the Strike King Pro Model jig," Brauer emphasized. "I don't believe there's a better bait on the market. I fish for a living, and I'm convinced that this jig has put me in contention to win more tournaments than any other bait I fish."

Strike King Elite 3/8-Ounce Spinnerbait

"I'll pick the Strike King Elite 3/8-ounce spinnerbait as my number-two bait. If I catch the bass on a jig, then I'll go to the spinnerbait. And how can I not pick the Strike King Flipping Tube as my third choice. This tube bait won the BASS Masters Classic for me in 1998."

1/4-Ounce Strike King Buzzbait

"My fourth pick will be the 1/4-ounce Strike King buzzbait, and for number five I'll have to throw a Series Four Strike King crankbait to fish for bass.

"With these five lures, I can be competitive on almost any lake I fish. Sure, you may catch more bass fishing a 4-inch plastic worm, but the bass you catch fishing that 4-inch plastic worm won't win as many tournaments as my five lures will.

"As a tournament fisherman, I have to spend my time fishing with not only the baits that will catch bass, but especially the baits that will take big bass. These five lures I've named will put big bass in your livewell. Remember, when you pick your five favorite lures to put in your sack to fish for bass, you have to decide if you're going to be fishing for big bass or any bass that will bite. To win tournaments, I have to fish for big bass. These lures are the ones I have the most confidence in to produce those big bass."

Davy Hite:

"Naturally, I'll have to put the Gambler Bacon Rind Jig as my favorite lure to fish since I won the BASS Masters Classic in 1999 with it," Hite advised. "I can put these small, plastic baits in my pocket and not count them in my sack. Here's the baits I'll put into my sack as my five favorite lures to fish."

Chartreuse-and-White Spinnerbait

"I'll choose either the 1/2- or the 3/8 ounce chartreuse-and-white spinnerbait with a willow-leaf blade in the back and a Colorado blade in the front. The 1/2- and the 3/8-ounce sizes are the most versatile of all spinnerbaits, but I'll often use spinnerbaits as small as 1/8-ounce or as big as 1 ounce. I'll fish this spinnerbait around all types of cover, including vegetation, woods and rocks."

Yo-Zuri Crankbait

"The Yo-Zuri crankbait will be my second selection, since the crankbait is an extremely versatile lure. Although I hate to limit myself to one size and one color of crankbait, if I have to pick, I'll choose a chartreuse-colored crankbait that will run from 5 to 10 feet deep. With this bait and this color, you can fish almost any water conditions anywhere in the nation."

Gambler or Ninja Jig

"The jig will be my third choice. If I'm not fishing a Gambler Bacon Rind, I'll fish a Gambler or a Ninja jig in the 3/8-ounce size, particularly in black or blue. That jig in those colors will produce bass in extremely clear or dirty water. I can fish this jig in 6 inches or 25 feet of water. Besides the Bacon Rind for a trailer, I like the Ninja Craw, the Crawdaddy or Guido Bug."

Gambler H20 Worm

"I also must have a floating plastic worm in my sack with my favorite, the H2O Worm produced by Gambler and designed by Randy Howell of North Carolina. This worm comes in a variety of colors, but if I only can pick one or two, I prefer the pink bubblegum or yellow worms in either the 6- or 8-inch sizes. I'll fish the 8-inch worm in dirty water and the 6-inch worm in clear water. I'll fish the floating worm around wood, rock or brush cover in shallow water or around shallow-water vegetation."

Gambler Plastic Lizard

Click to Enlarge"For my last choice I'll pick a Gambler Plastic Lizard. I like the plastic lizard because I can Texas rig or Carolina rig it. I can flip it or pitch it, or I can drag it on the bottom. The plastic lizard is such a versatile lure, there is hardly anywhere it can't be fished."

Conclusions: These seasoned bass anglers all have selected the lures they can fish under the widest variety of fishing conditions at almost any time of the year or at specific times of the year. Now if you want to keep your tackle box small and not hurt your back getting in and out of your bass boat with heavy tackle boxes, pick 10 lures from those suggested by these professional bass fishermen. Learn how to fish these 10 lures in all types of water and weather conditions and with a wide variety of presentations and retrieves to catch more bass with fewer lures each time you go fishing.
