FISHING TIPS FROM JAY YELAS
Jay Yelas' Top Bass Lakes
EDITOR'S
NOTE: Jay Yelas of Tyler, Texas, has fished on
the B.A.S.S. Masters tournament circuit for many years, qualifying for
the BASS Masters Classic often and winning the 2002 BASS Masters Classic.
QUESTION: What are your favorite five big bass lakes
to fish?
ANSWER: If I wanted to fish for bass over 8 pounds, Lake Fork, Texas would
definitely be on my list. At one time, I would have put it as No. 1, but
now I'd put it as No. 5 on my list. Lake Fork had a fish kill a couple
of years ago. Many 8- to 12-pounders are still being caught, just not
as many. I would put Lake Cooper, Texas, which is a new lake, on my list.
It is one hour north of Lake Fork. Lake Cooper has been cranking out all
kinds of big bass. I would also include Ray Roberts Reservoir, Texas,
near Dallas, on my list. I would then head to southern California for
my other two favorite lakes: Lake Castaic and Lake Casitas.
QUESTION:
What are the five lakes you would fish to catch bass weighing over 4 pounds?
ANSWER: I would still fish Lake Fork and Cooper Lake. As well, I'd fish
the Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri, which is loaded with 4- to 6-pound
bass. Toledo Bend on the Texas/Louisiana border is dynamite, and Lake
Guntersville in Alabama has come back with some big bass lately. A lot
of good fish are being caught there.
