John's Journal... Entry 213, Day 2

SECRETS OF THE CLASSIC WINNERS: KEVIN VANDAM AND RICK CLUNN

More Of Kevin Vandam's Tackle Box

Editor's Note: Kevin VanDam of Kalamazoo, Michigan, an avid angler all his life, has won the Bassmasters Classic and the title of FLW Angler of the Year and has remained number one on www.bassfan.com for more than a year.

Question: Yesterday you told us what kinds of baits you would fill the first five trays of your tackle box with. Today, give us what kinds of baits you will put in the other five trays.

"Tray six will hold even more crankbaits because this lure is so essential to my bass-fishing success that I need two trays to hold all my crankbaits. This tray will contain deep-diving crankbaits that I don't have in tray five, including crankbaits in Strike King's Series 4, 5 and 6. The crankbait is a versatile lure that can be fished in many different water depths. Too, I like lots of color patterns of crankbaits to fish for bass. With Strike King's Series 1 to Series 6 crankbaits, I can fish all the depths of water where bass hold.

"I'll make tray seven my soft-plastic worm tray. My favorite worm is Strike King's 3X Ribbontail worm. But I'll also have some straight-tailed finesse worms and floating worms in this tray. I just can't go fishing without a tray full of plastic worms to fish from the surface down to the bottom. Too, I like a variety of worm colors, including watermelon, bubble gum, Merthiolate, pumpkin, June Bug, red shad and every other color I can cram into this tray. Most of my worms will be 7-inches long. On top of my worms, I'll have plastic lizards in many colors. Since I've got to put worm hooks, worm weights and barrel swivels for Carolina rigging somewhere, I hope this tray is deep.

"I'll put a soft plastic known as the Zulu in tray eight. This twitch-style bait imitates a baitfish and has a wild, erratic type of action. You can fish it like a jerkbait. I like the 3X Zulu the best because it's tough and stays on the hook a long time without tearing. Pearl, bubble gum, natural shad and other baitfish-imitation colors are my favorites for Zulus.

"In tray nine, on top of my Zulus, I'll place some of the new Strike King 5-inch Zero worms. This stick worm, a fast-sinking type of worm, has received a lot of hype this year. I like to have this worm in a variety of colors and fish June Bug and bubble-gum colored worms around vegetation.

"I'll reserve tray 10 for jerkbaits. I'll have both suspending and floating Wild Shiner jerkbaits in a variety of colors. Chrome and gold are my favorite colors, and I'll also include some perch and natural shad colors. I want to have some baits that will give off flash, and other jerkbaits that have more-subtle colors.

"If I only can take one, 10-tray tackle box bass fishing with me, I'll pick these lures in many sizes and colors to stock those 10 trays."
