John's Journal... Entry 199, Day 3

HOW TO GET THE MOST OUT OF YOUR BASS-FISHING GUIDE

To Catch Large Numbers of Bass

Editor’s Note: In my opinion, the best way to find and catch the most bass any day you fish is to hire a guide who’s on the water everyday and should know where the bass are holding.

“If my client tells me he wants to catch large numbers of bass, I’ll take him to an area where I know we’ll find plenty of bass, even though the bass may be small,” Charlie Ingram said. “But while we fish the holes for a large number of bass, we’ll also fish two or three places where the client may catch a nicer bass. I hope my fishermen will catch fish, and their rods will stay bent all day. However, at some time during the day, I want my client to have the opportunity to hook a real string-stretcher. Even though the angler may prefer to take large numbers of bass, I know he thinks that if he catches a lot of bass, sooner or later he’ll take a big one. So I’ll fish some big-bass places between my holes I go to that have large numbers of bass in them.”

Ingram has as his goal to provide the opportunity for every man, woman or child who fishes with him to hook the biggest bass he or she has ever taken. On many occasions, he has success. Although his client may not land the fish of his lifetime, Ingram hopes that customer will have had a bass like that on the line. Ingram fishes different baits in various areas of the lake, depending on the time of year and the bass’s seasonal migration pattern. However, Ingram quickly mentions the 6-inch plastic worm and the 6-inch plastic lizard as the most consistent baits for catching large numbers of bass at almost any time of the year.

“During the spring of the year, I concentrate most of my fishing on the first bottom breaks closest to the grass or weeds in the lake,” Ingram said. “You’ll find these areas are where the bass will school-up and hold before, during and after the spawn. Although many bass will bed in the grass, these fish often are harder to catch than the bass holding on the break line.” In the summer months, Ingram will take his clients who want to catch numbers of bass to the main river ledges where they’ll fish the plastic worm and the jigging spoon.
“We’ll take the most fish using the Carolina-rigged plastic worm and plastic lizard on these main river ledges any time of the year, except during the spring,” Ingram explained. “Main river ledges always will hold plenty of bass. I also find bass schooled-up at almost any time of the year on main river points, underwater points and humps. I consistently catch those fish on the Carolina-rigged worm or lizard.”

Ingram and one of the guides who also works for Lake Eufaula Guide Service, Jackie Thompson, also of Eufaula, have proved the value of trolling. By trolling a Mann’s 20+ on river ledges and creek channels and over humps and drop-offs, a novice angler only will need to hold a rod in his hand and start reeling when a bass takes the bait. “If a beginner can’t cast and doesn’t want to learn, then I’ve found trolling the Mann’s 20+ along main river-ledge breaks the best way to produce that bass for that particular fisherman,” Ingram commented. Ingram and Thompson troll in 15 to 25 feet of water with 12-pound test line on a 6-1/2-foot medium, heavy-action rod with a bait-casting reel.
