John's Journal... Entry 196, Day 2

LARRY NIXON ON BASSING

New Lures Larry Nixon Uses And How He Fishes Them

EDITOR'S NOTE: Fifty-one-year-old Larry Nixon of Bee Branch, Arkansas has fish professionally since 1976, won 14 B.A.S.S. tournaments and two Angler-of-the-Year titles. He was also the first professional angler to earn more than $1 million in B.A.S.S. winnings.

QUESTION: Larry, which baits do you particularly like to fish with in the spring?
ANSWER: I like a plastic lizard and a plastic crawfish bait. They will catch fish on sunny days or cloudy days. For me, these lures are confidence lures for the springtime. I tell people when they're fishing plastic lures to always remember that the size of the sinker is really important.

QUESTION: How much weight do you have above that lizard or that craw?
ANSWER: Well, when the water is cold, you want a bait to fall slowly. You want a bait you can cast with but that will fall at a certain speed to create more strikes. The colder the water, the slower the fall you want on the bait.

When the water temperature is 60 degrees or warmer, then often a lure that falls a little bit faster will get more reaction strikes than a lure that falls slowly. So a fisherman must think about the size of the sinker, especially in high-pressured waters where the bass aren't biting.

QUESTION: How do you trigger the bass into striking?
ANSWER: Use a 5/16- or 3/8-ounce sinker on a plastic lizard or a plastic craw, which will make the lure sink fairly fast. In water that has a little visibility, that's about the only way you can get bass to bite. You're making the lure blow right through the strike zone of the bass, and the bass will react to it. When the bass aren't feeding, that's the trick to catching them.
