THREE-STORY FISHING

Reds and Triggers on the Bottom

EDITOR'S NOTE: You can catch more fish and have more fun if you know how to fish all three stories of the water. On a family outing to Orange Beach, Alabama, my family and friends had rod-bending action all day.

On our trip with Captain Walker, we also used conventional bottom-fishing rigs on other outfits rigged with 60-pound mono. He tied a barrel swivel to the end of the main line and then a section of 80-pound mono with two dropper lines spaced about 12-inches apart with no. 1/0 hooks attached to them. Twelve inches below the last dropper, he affixed a 20-ounce weight to make sure the baits -- small pieces of cut squid or cigar minnow halves -- reached the bottom. By watching his depth sounder, Walker knew how far off the bottom the snapper and triggerfish held. He then would tell his anglers how many turns to reel up off the bottom to put their baits in front of the fish.

"When you're fishing for bottom feeders, you have to set the hook as soon as you feel the bite," Walker explained. "Any time you see your line stop on its way down, engage the reel, and set the hook. Often a triggerfish will take the bait before your line gets to the bottom."

For more information on how to fish three stories of water simultaneously, contact Captain Bobby Walker, P.O. Box 100, Orange Beach, AL 36561, or call (251) 981-6159. You can contact the Alabama Gulf Coast Convention and Visitors Bureau at (800) 745-7263 or www.gulfshores.com.
