John's Journal... Entry 165, Day 5
Hunting Alligators

Find Out What Else the Lodge of Louisiana Has to Offer

EDITOR'S NOTE: Bo Hamilton, the manager of the Lodge of Louisiana in Barataria, Louisiana, is a well-known Gulf Coast angler and bowhunter. Today we'll talk with Hamilton to learn more about alligator hunting at the lodge.

Question: When you're alligator hunting, can you expect to get your gator in one day?
Hamilton: Most hunters usually get their alligators in one day of hunting.

Question: If people want to stay for a couple of days, what all is there to do at the Lodge of Louisiana?
Hamilton: Well of course, with the Lodge of Louisiana we have all the fishing for redfish and speckled trout that you need. Too, black drum also has started running.

Question: Tell me about the fishing.
Hamilton: Redfish are basically fished for in any number of the bays or bayous just south of Barataria waterway system and north of Grand Isle, Louisiana. You're looking at a dependable 2-pound speckled trout up to a 5 pounder. Your speckled trout limit is 25; however, we do promote catch and release. Legally, each person is allowed to keep five redfish. This morning we had eight redfish caught in the 22-inch, 8- to 10-pounds each. We have all your fish cleaned and packaged for travel.

Question: What's the approximate cost to come to the Lodge of Louisiana, hunt for an alligator and go speckled trout/redfish fishing?
Hamilton: We have a two-day fishing package for $575 per person. A combo trip that includes alligator hunting for two days and fishing costs approximately $1575. This price includes your room, meals, guides, tackle, bar and alligator hunt. The only thing extra will be the guide gratuity and anything regarding the alligator.

Question: What else do you offer here at the lodge?
Hamilton: Other than alligator hunts and fishing, we offer fine duck hunting from the middle of November until the end of January, with a couple of splits in there.
