ROB SCOTT, GUIDE FOR BIG DEER
Another Memorable Hunt
EDITOR'S
NOTE: Avid deer hunter and experienced guide, Rob Scott of Alma, Georgia,
has been working with Buckhorn Outfitters in Greene County, Illinois,
for three years. This week Scott shares some of his secrets for finding
and taking big bucks and tells us a few of his hunters' best deer-hunting
success stories.
Last year I was guiding a hunter who's been hunting with
me for five years now. His name is Chris Cerminero of Pennsylvania, and
he and his brothers hunt together every year for 10 days during the second
week of November. On this particular hunt, Chris had a 142-inch buck come
into a nearby clover field. Chris took a shot, but he later radioed us
to say that he thought he'd missed the deer.
He
was discouraged and ready to come in for the day, but we told him to sit
tight so we could double check on the buck. As we drove up to the clover
field, we spotted a 160-inch, 10-point buck and a 140-inch, 9-point buck
that had been running a doe all over the field. We dropped Chris' brother
off in that spot, and he walked over to a stand to set up on the bucks.
Then Chris and I began to follow his deer's blood trail. After a few minutes,
I happened to come upon the deer. I yelled over to Chris that I'd found
his deer. I was excited to know that a friend who'd been trying so hard
to bag a buck was successful. Chris thought he'd completely missed the
deer, but his shot was perfect. The 8-point buck weighed 142 pounds.
