John's Journal... Entry 144, Day 4

ROB SCOTT, GUIDE FOR BIG DEER

Best Hunt From 2001

EDITOR'S NOTE: Avid deer hunter and experienced guide, Rob Scott of Alma, Georgia, has been working with Buckhorn Outfitters in Greene County, Illinois, for three years. This week Scott shares some of his secrets for finding and taking big bucks and tells us a few of his hunters' best deer-hunting success stories.

Although the weather was extremely hot in 2001, we had several good hunts. One of the best hunts was when Mike Merchant, a RV shop owner and a good friend of mine from Dublin, Georgia, took his first big deer. He'd been in the RV business for about 25 years and had not had much luck harvesting deer. On this hunt, he was very nervous. We put him up on a ridge and told him that the bucks would be crossing there. A coyote came out, and Mike shot the coyote.

Then a doe walked by Mike's stand, and he shot the doe. Mike didn't see any more activity for a long time, and he wasn't sure he'd take a buck that day. But about an hour before dark, a 158-inch buck moved into the ridge. Mike shot the deer at 20 yards and bagged his first big deer. He was so excited.
