John's Journal... Entry 122, Day 3

ELK HUNTING WITH RENOWNED OUTDOORSMAN, STEVE PUPPE

Bowhunting Versus Gun Hunting For Elk

EDITOR'S NOTE: For the past 25 years, Steve Puppe of Hamilton, Minnesota, a member of the Mossy Oak Hunt Team, has been very fortunate to gain a wealth of hunting knowledge and experience which has given him the opportunity to be featured in several hunting videos and national magazines. He is known as a public speaker and currently is a co-host of the popular television series "Outdoor Expeditions" on the Outdoor Channel. Puppe enjoys sharing his knowledge and experience with hunters -- young and old alike. This week Puppe will tell us about his experiences hunting elk and will walk us through some of the most-overlooked steps to elk-hunting success.
QUESTION: Describe the difference between bowhunting elk and gun hunting them.
ANSWER: Bowhunting elk is very similar to hunting turkey. You have to try to find an animal and get close enough to them to get a good shot. Bowhunting enables you to hunt more in timber. Too, bowhunting generally is a more exciting hunt. Gun hunts involve covering ground, finding the animal and catching them out in an open meadow or a park. Most gun hunting takes place early in the morning or late in the evening. However, bowhunting can be an all-day ordeal. With bowhunting, you cover more ground -- especially when hunting elk. Elk are unlike most animals because they travel a lot. You may find an elk in one area today, but tomorrow he may be 3 miles away. You have to be mobile, and you have to cover a lot of ground.

QUESTION: Which type of hunter would you rather guide?
ANSWER: Personally, I like bowhunting for elk.

QUESTION: Why is that?
ANSWER: Bowhunting provides you with the extra challenge of calling effectively and bringing an animal in close enough to take a shot. I'm not saying that shooting long distances with a rifle isn't a challenge. But, I like the one-on-one game with an animal that bowhunting creates.

QUESTION: Bring the animal in close.
ANSWER: Yes, it's always a thrill and a challenge.
