John's Journal... Entry33 - Day 3

"One time I hunted turkeys in Alabama with Joe Drake, a world turkey-calling champion from Georgia," Dave Streb of Orchard Park, New York, national sales manager for Quaker Boy Calls and longtime, avid turkey hunter, recalled. "When we got out of our vehicle before first light, Joe owl hooted. A turkey gobbled. When Joe told me that the gobbler was all mine, I thought to myself that Joe and probably everyone in three counties had worked this turkey. I decided I'd have to use a different strategy to take that tom.

"I tried to get as close as I could to this turkey that was gobbling from a little nearby knoll. I got down on my hands and knees to crawl in close to the bird, since we were on private land. But in the process of trying to sneak up on the turkey, I flushed a flock of hens.

Then the turkey gobbled to the Easy Yelper. In only a few minutes, he came in, and I took him. When I got back to the car and met Joe, he couldn't believe I'd killed the turkey he'd been hunting. I never told Joe that I flushed the hens.

"I took that gobbler because this bad bird was accustomed to hearing the hens fly down and then flying to them and staying with them all day. When I accidentally flushed the hens off the roost, the gobbler just thought they were flying down. So when he heard a hen calling, he flew down and came to the call.
