Journal... Entry32 - Day 2
EDITOR'S NOTE: Tad Brown, of Columbia, Missouri, enjoys hunting crows and has hunted crows for numbers of years. QUESTION: Tad, what kind of places do you look for to call crows? ANSWER: A crow doesn't leave any sign per se. When I've hunted deer in the early morning and evening, I'll notice where crows congregate in different areas. Crows roost consistently in certain areas, and I like to go where I know the crows will be. In the morning, I'll get at the edge of a cornfield between it and the roost area and catch those crows coming in to feed. I do the opposite in the evening by getting in the roost area to catch the crows coming back to roost. QUESTION: Can you call crows all year long? I know some states have a season, but many states don't. Is there any particular time of year that's better for calling crows? ANSWER: I like to call crows more in the fall and winter, when they're not nesting, and they're bunched-up. You may have 20 or 30 crows come in to you in the fall and winter, but in the spring and summer, they seem to pair off to raise their young. QUESTION: How long will you sit and call crows before you change your location? ANSWER: If I think it's a productive area, sometimes I can sit there all day and have good shooting, just like duck hunting.
