John's Journal... Entry 8 - Day 2

Fishing the Chandeleur Islands - Day Two

I really enjoy wade fishing at the Chandeleur Islands. I caught specks, reds and flounder in water from 10 to 18 inches deep to three to four feet deep.

The good thing about the Chandeleurs is you can wade fish on either side of the island and even in the middle of the island. Because it is an estuary island you can get bait fish many places and many inshore species.

I looked for the areas of the island that seemed to have the most current running through them and decided these areas would have the most fish.

Be sure to bring insect repellent, wading shoes, polarized glasses, and a wind breaker. Even though the surface temperature is cool the water is quite comfortable.

When I was fishing I was bottom hopping my grubs and catching just about every fish that swims. The advantage to wading is that there are very few places that you can't fish and even in the deepest spots the water was never more than waist deep.

Tomorrow we will look at boat fishing the Chandeluers.
