C&B GUIDE SERVICE AT LAKE GUNTERSVILLE - OFTEN CALLED
AMERICA'S BEST BIG BASS LAKE
The Trophy Bass Lake
EDITOR'S
NOTE: Bobby Bright and Charley Slaten of Boaz, Alabama,
own C&B Guide Service and specialize in fishing
Alabama's Lake Guntersville, Lake Logan Martin and Lake
Neely Henry. These two fishing guides make their living
helping their customers catch fish, and they depend
on their equipment every day they're on the water. This
week Bright and Slaten will tell us how they fish and
how they consistently catch more fish than other anglers
do.
Question: What are the bass doing at Lake Guntersville
in the early summer?
Bright: What are the bass doing at Lake Guntersville
in the early summer? The bass are just coming off the
beds now. There may be a few left on beds, but for the
most part they've all left the beds. There's been so
much sight fishing going on at the lake during the spring
that most of the really-big bass have left that shallow
water. So at this time of the year, one of my favorite
baits to fish at Guntersville is the Senko worm on 12-pound-test
Mossy Oak Fishing Line. I like the 12-pound-test Mossy
Oak Fishing Line because I'm not using
a weight on the line and need a smaller diameter line
to allow the bait to fall. Also in the area that I'm
fishing at Guntersville, there's not any tree stops
or stumps to get hung up in. All I have to worry about
is getting the bass out of the grass. The grass at this
time of year is about 6 or 8 inches up off the bottom,
so you really don't have to worry about your line getting
hung up in the grass too much. I like to fish the Senko
on grassy points. I'm looking for a flat where the grass
comes out and makes a point.
Question: How are you rigging the Senko worm?
Bright: I rig my Senko worm Texas style, and I know
that many anglers rig it wacky style. However, when
you rig the worm wacky style, it will hang-up in the
grass, but if you rig it Texas style without a weight,
it will come through the grass and lay on top of the
grass.
Question: Most people are fishing big spinner baits
out on the main channel or deep-diving baits out in
the deep water. So, why are you fishing the Senko?
Bright:
I like the Senko worm on the 12-pound-test line this
time of the year because the bass aren't seeing this
lure, and nobody is fishing as slow as we are. As the
weather gets warmer, the fishermen can fish deeper and
faster, but Charley and I have learned if we fish slower
and with baits that other fishermen aren't using, we
can catch the bass that other fishermen aren't catching.
We like to fish Junebug, watermelon-seed and black Senkos.
We'll just cast it out, let it fall, and then once it
hits the bottom, we twitch the baits with our rod tips
to cause them to jump up off the bottom. Next we'll
let it fall back again to the bottom. We're fishing
the bait extremely low and what we've seen is that those
big bass will inhale the Senkos and hold them in their
mouths. You won't get the violent strike that you expect
to get on a spinner bait or a crankbait when you're
fishing Senko this time of year. So we're watching our
lines to see them twitch or move sideways to let us
know when we need to set the hook. When we see those
lines move, we really set the hooks hard. Of course,
bass don't hit the Senko worms every day. So we also
fish jigs and spinner baits in the early summer too.
Question: Most people are fishing the Senko on heavier
line than 12-pound test. Why are you fishing 12-pound-test
line?
Bright:
At this time of the year, I want my Senko to fall faster
then it will on heavier line. I'm fishing in 8 to 10
feet of water, so I don't mind waiting on my bait to
reach the bottom. However, I don't want to fall asleep
waiting for it to get there. This is the reason I like
the 12-pound-test Mossy Oak Fishing Line for fishing
the Senko during the month of June.
