Hunt and Harvest Mature Buck Deer Every Year with the Same System That Produces Championship Football Teams

Day 2: How to Legally Steal Your Neighbor’s Buck Deer

Editor’s Note: “Stay with the process, get better every day, do everything right each day, and the outcome will take care of itself,” is a gospel Coach Nick Saban, head football coach at the University of Alabama, preaches to his football team daily. Each year, his teams produce the opportunity for being champions. The result of Saban’s gospel has been three national championships and three SEC championships. This type of philosophy also will produce older-age-class deer year after year for hunters.

Find out if your state allows baiting and/or feeding deer during deer season or not, and after the season. Set-up feeders on your property, if allowed, close to where you plan to plant a crop for deer during the spring. Make sure your feeder is close to a thick-cover bedding area that you will use as a sanctuary during the 2015 deer season. Keep plenty of food in the feeder at all times.

Here are some things we know for certain about deer and deer movement:

* Food for deer is in short supply and high demand after deer season.
* Deer usually will bed down within 100 to 200 yards of their food sources, during the late season and after the season is over.
* Deer will walk a long ways to get something to eat. By putting out feeders close to thick cover sanctuaries on the property you hunt, you can pull and hold older-age-class bucks on your property during the coldest part of the winter. By providing a bedding area close to your feeders, you have a very good chance of holding those mature bucks on your property all winter long
* Trail cameras near your feeder will enable you to see how many new bucks you pull onto your property after deer season ends. Possibly, you can begin to include these bucks on your hit list for the next year. After deer season ends, the purpose of the feeding, bedding and trail camera program is to pull in older-age-class bucks from surrounding properties. Once you get those bucks on your property by providing a bedding area (sanctuary) and food, the next step is to hold them on your property until the opening day of bow season.
