Day 3: Choosing the Best Days to Hunt the Dominant Buck Deer with Dr. Larry Marchinton
Editor’s Note: Scientific research has learned some facts about big white-tailed bucks that can make your hunting this year your best ever.
  Another integral part of successfully hunting the dominant buck is to identify the best day to hunt a trophy deer during the peak of the rut. “To maximize your chances of taking this trophy buck, I believe the day should be cool with lower-than-average temperatures,” Dr. Larry Marchinton, retired deer researcher from the University of Georgia, states. “There should be a high-pressure front moving in, and the day should be clear. If you can hunt a bluebird day after a cold front has passed through during the rut, your chances of seeing the dominant buck are greatly increased. Although I cannot prove biologically why this type of day is the most-productive day for hunting the rut, I have kept detailed records of my hunting success and the hunting successes of the people with whom I hunt. And my records, which include the day’s temperature, how many deer were seen as well as in what areas, and at what time of day the deer were spotted, bear out this hypothesis.
  “From these records, I easily can conclude that the days with the cooler temperatures during the rut and after a front has passed through, produce the most deer sightings as well as the most trophy bucks seen. Although deer may move as a front is passing through a region, I know from my own hunting experiences that after that front passes, the deer are going to move and so will the dominant buck. Extremely-cold weather is another factor that must be figured into this formula of when to hunt the dominant buck. When the weather is severe, and the temperature is far below normal for that time of year and location, I have found that deer movement is greatly retarded.”
