The Weather Man Will Lie – Well, Maybe Just Not Tell the Whole Truth – But You Still Can Catch Plenty of Fish

Day 4: Life at Alabama’s Beaches Doesn’t End After Red Snapper Season Finishes July 16th

Click for Larger ViewRed snapper season ends on July 16th, but just because red snapper season is over doesn’t mean you have to quit fishing in the Gulf of Mexico. Actually, you can buy more fishing time for less money and catch and keep more fish after red-snapper season than you can during the season. Captain Randy Boggs of the charter boat “Reel Surprise” has an innovative way to give anglers more bounce for their bucks after the close of red-snapper season. “We’re going to offer an 8-hour deep-sea fishing trip, three days a week, for only $5 more than our usual 6-hour trip,” Boggs explains. “This will be a party-boat trip. You’ll be able to get on the boat and go out for 8 hours, for only $90 per person. We’re running this special offer so that we can take our customers farther offshore and maximize the number of fish we can catch after snapper season. Anglers will get 2-more hours of fishing in deeper water on an 8-hour trip, for only $5 more than they would pay on a 6-hour trip. The boat will leave at 7:00 am and return back to SanRoc Cay Marina at 3:00 pm. We’ll be able to get to the depth of water where we can catch the bigger white snapper, vermilion snapper and king mackerel. The king mackerel is a bigger fish than we normally catch on a party boat, and our customers really enjoy catching them. We also will catch scamp, scamp grouper, red grouper and gag grouper. These longer trips will allow us to get out to water depths of 130- to 150-feet deep, where we usually will find the bigger fish.

Because fuel prices are down right now, we feel we can offer this 8-hour trip as a savings to our customers. We believe our price will be the most-reasonable price that anglers can find on the Gulf Coast, and will be an opportunity for them to catch the most and the biggest fish.”

Click for larger ViewAlthough the “Reel Surprise” charter boat is rated to be able to take 64 fishermen, Boggs only books 32 to 34 fishermen, to allow anglers 3 feet on either side of them when they are fishing. Another advantage that the “Reel Surprise” has this year is that it has two new engines that produce 1340 horsepower, making the “Reel Surprise” one of the fastest boats on the Gulf Coast, which reduces the amount of time anglers have to spend getting to and from fishing grounds. “On the 8-hour trips we will be able to get out 25 to 30 miles from port, which is farther out than most party boats ever get to fish,” Boggs says.

One of the big advantages of party-boat fishing is that if you are by yourself, or you have only two or three family members or fishing buddies, and you want to go offshore fishing, you can go on a party boat. Click for Larger ViewAnglers on a party boat are different groups of fishermen who go out together and fish, often for less money than is required for a private charter. “We don’t have a minimum number of people you have to have in your party to fish with Reel Surprise charters,” Boggs explains. “We only have to have a minimum of 25 people that can be made-up of several different groups. When we have 34 people, if there are still people who want to go, we put them on another boat. We’ll be glad to see 1 to 30 people show-up to go fishing with us.”
