Fishing Alabama’s Gulf Coast After the Oil Spill on the Gulf of Mexico

Day 3: Young People Enjoy a Red Snapper Birthday on Alabama’s Gulf Coast

Dr. Jeffrey Dugas, an orthopedic surgeon with Andrews Sport Medicine and Orthopaedic Center in Birmingham, Ala., took his son Christopher and some of the other football players on the 11-year-olds’ Steelers football team to Orange Beach for Christopher’s birthday party. They chartered the offshore charter boat, the “C-Rose” out of Zeke’s Landing Marina with Captain Dewitt Sightler, for a 6-hour trip. “We went a little bit farther out than I normally go on a 6-hour trip,” Sightler explains. “I wanted these young boys to have a trip of a lifetime, catch some really-big fish and remember this fishing trip and birthday party for years to come. Each one of the boys caught their own fish. The fish were mainly red snapper weighing from 8 to 14 pounds, but they also caught amberjacks that weighed over 20 pounds and triggerfish that weighed 5 to 8 pounds. I tried to make sure that all the boys had bent rods at every stop we made. I love to take youngsters and families out and show them just how great the fishing can be out of Orange Beach, Ala., how much fun they can have, and how many fish they can catch. I also wanted each of those boys to have some fish to eat, while they were here in Orange Beach and some to take home to their families. We had a great trip and caught plenty of fish. I really believe that Dr. Dugas and the boys enjoyed themselves.” Click on the video below, and let Dr. Dugas tell you about the trip he and the boys had.
